The chick on Sports Nation is my new best friend…I want to be her! She broke her ankle last week. That’s important because she said “I have a message for Jay Cutler. Seven screws and a plate on Thursday and I’m here on Monday.” CLASSIC!!!
Well, I guess I should address the Superbowl. I didn’t have a team playing this year and it really didn’t matter who won. It was played in my Dallas Cowboys’ Stadium and that was hard for me to watch. It should’ve been the Cowboys, but they jacked that up the first game or two of the season. Anyway, I don’t like Big Ben and I don’t like James Harrison so I guess I was leaning more toward the Packers to win. I like Aaron Rodgers and I like Clay Matthews too, so it was all right that they won. I would have rather had my Cowboys or Titans in the game, but there’s always next year, right? I tried to offer my services to Jerry in order to help the ‘Boys out, but he hasn’t returned my call. I’m hopeful! If I win the lottery, the big bucks, I’m going to ask Jerry if I can buy a couple of players from him. I just want Ware, Felix and Witten…I’m sure Jerry would be okay with that, right? Like I said, I think he’s avoiding me.
Since my daughter has been competing in gymnastics this year, we’ve become very interested in collegiate gymnastics. The Arkansas Razorback women’s team is downright good. They lost the first two meets, barely, but since then they’ve won 4 straight, with wins over #4 Georgia and #19 LSU (in Baton Rouge). Those are significant because Arkansas has never beaten either team before. We saw one meet in person and it was amazing. What those girls do, flying through the air with grace and ease, is artful almost. It makes me feel like I could get out there and do it, though NO ONE wants to see that.
And baseball is just around the corner. I can’t believe it’s already that time of year, but I love it! I hope to catch a few Hog games this season and of course we’ll be sure and check out some Travelers games. Baseball is so much better in person.
Well, it’s late and I’ve rambled on long enough. I aspire to be like this Beadle chick on SN…dream job!

I simply thunked about it (and I wish everyone else would once in a while)
Think about this...what if everyone in the state/region etc. was talking about how well you did/did not do your job. They talk about this on the radio, message boards, newspapers, etc. and criticized you about things. They want to be really quick to say how they would do it better if they had the chance but they have no experience whatsoever when it comes to doing your job. What if your exact salary was posted for all the public to know? What if your family had to read and hear this criticism? What if your "success" on the job had a lot to do with how well 19 and 20 year old KIDS perform on a regular basis? Think about that...and STOP criticizing Pelphrey!!!
And think about this…what if you are a 19 year old kid playing basketball and you’re doing your best? You’re trying hard to play the best you can and you get out there and give it your all every game? Then you have to hear people on your home court boo you and say how terrible you are and scream and demand that your coach be fired and THEY HAVE NEVER PLAYED BASKETBALL A DAY IN THEIR LIVES? What gives them the right to be so vocal? They would say it’s the fact that they buy season tickets and they have a right to speak up. I understand that, but that still isn’t good enough. Not only that, but they criticize those who do not share their views and scream it as loud as they do. If you stand up for the person and try to defend or explain something, they quickly shut it down and don’t want to hear it. I wish those same people would be subjected to the very same scrutiny when it comes their own jobs and see how much they like it. I know they wouldn’t. If you don’t like the way someone coaches or if you think a team is bad, try this…STOP WATCHING! If it is that painful for you, don’t put yourself through that. It’s a simple concept, really. If you are allergic to shellfish, and every time you eat it you break out, but you continue to eat it, don’t complain about the fact that it makes you sick to eat it. Sheesh!

Undefeated No More!
Picture it…Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, Kansas, 2011. A 69 game home win streak is on the line. The Longhorns are down 12 at the half. What do you expect me to think would happen? I guarantee it wasn’t what actually happened. The Horns came out on fire in the 2nd half, scoring 51 points to beat the Jayhawks 74 to 63. This ended two streaks: the 69 home win streak and the 18 game win streak this season. The Kansas Jayhawks are undefeated no more thanks to my Longhorns.
To switch gears here a little bit, yesterday I was presented with my Fantasy Football League Championship 2010 Trophy. It might be the only trophy I’ve ever won. I finally have figured out how to play fantasy football well. This was my 3rd year to play…going from 10th out of 10 the first year, to 7th out of 10 last year, to 1st out of 14 and league champ this year! I do owe some credit to JJ for helping me with my draft a little but he did assist somewhat. I’ll write his name on masking tape with a Sharpie and stick it on the trophy. I also won $50 so I’ll take him to dinner with that money as a thank-you. This was exciting and very fun, but it’s also causing me some serious anxiety…I can’t get any better next year. The first year I was fine with losing because last place is safe. No matter what you do the next year, it’s at least as good or better than last place. Then, 7th place was fine because it showed improvement but it wasn’t anything to worry about having to live up to. But winning means I have to win or come close to it every year. Ugh! Such pressure…Vince, hurry up and find a team so I can draft you and have you sit on my bench all year again, for the 4th year in a row. Ha!
Now, tomorrow is the continuation of the NFL playoffs. Since neither of my teams are still in (or ever were in for that matter) I don’t too much care who wins but…I’ll pick the games anyway. I’m still not sure who this Bears team is and the Packers are on fire, but the game will be played in Chicago and the conditions always favor Chicago in this case so I’m picking the Bears. As for the Pittsburgh, New York Jets game, I say the Steelers have their way with Sanchez and the Jets. That makes it a Chicago/Pittsburgh Superbowl in Texas at Jerry’s house. If someone out there wants to give me 3 tickets I’ll gladly take them.
So, as I sit here watching the South Carolina/Kentucky game, waiting for the Arkansas/Florida game to start, I’m reminded of a couple of things…

My First Time (no, it's not what you think)
So, I know it's been a long time but I'm back. The timing of my return, one might question, seeing as how the college football season is over, but College Basketball is in full swing, the NFL playoffs are on-going and baseball will start soon. Gymnastics is going strong now as well. I'm going to make today's entry short, sweet and to the point.
This past weekend, my daughter and I had the opportunity to travel to the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) to watch a women’s’ gymnastics meet in person. This was something I had never experienced at the collegiate level. For years (it seemed) my parents drug me all over the great state of Texas to watch my younger sister compete in gymnastics meets. Now, my daughter is doing the same, though I will say going to the meets now are much more enjoyable to watch, and it's not because the hard benches and bleachers have been replaced with Lazy Boy recliners because they haven't. I watch the competition differently, very intently. I keep a spreadsheet of all the scores, averages, increase or decrease, etc. Most people who know me are not surprised about that at all. But let’s get back to my original thought…the meet was AWESOME! First of all, I only had to pay $2.00 a ticket and the programs were FREE…yes I said free. Amazing! But after it was all over, we walked over to the football practice facility and took a peek into what I can only refer to as the closest thing to my version of heaven on earth. I had never gotten to see where the “Pig Sooies” workout and it is one incredible place. The lights in the stadium were on (I heard there were a bunch of big-time recruits on campus) so we drove by there to see it.
Saturday, we’re sitting at lunch and we decide to go and watch the Hogs play basketball. I had never gone to a game in Fayetteville and just had to experience it in person. I was not disappointed. We sat in the rafters but we didn’t care. The first half was nothing special but the Hogs pulled to within 4 to end the half. 33 to 29 was the score. During the halftime celebration we were surprised when the entire football team walked out onto the floor. Coach Petrino was there and they were all being honored for making it to the Sugar Bowl and having such an amazing season. Then, in the 2nd half, the Hogs started playing some pretty decent basketball…they ended up winning 70 to 65. I was not disappointed with my first experience going to a game at Bud Walton.
So, since it’s been such a long time since I’ve made an entry, I’ll leave it at this…Go Hogs! I’m behind you guys (and gals) in every sport…I support Petrino and Pelphrey and bleed RED!
