Is anyone even watching that?

Okay, so lots of "important" sports stuff happened today. Federer wins his 16th major with a win at the Australian Open. Does this surprise anyone? He's a phenom on the court. And, does anybody else find it interesting that all, or at least an overwhelming majority, of the international athletes speak English? Anyway, Federer wins again. So, that makes this year's Australian Open winners: Serena and Federer. Again, anyone surprised?

In NFL news: the AFC beat the NFC 41 to 34 in the Pro-Bowl. Did anyone watch this? I did, but I'm not normal (no jokes please!) Should this game even be played? When the NFL decided to move it from Hawaii to Miami and to the week before the Superbowl, it lost tons of appeal for spectators and players. It was entertaining, but it wasn't a real professional football game. No player plays at full speed during this game, except for maybe Ray Lewis, but he knows only one intensity level... The NFL needs to reconsider moving the game back to Hawaii. JMO

In the biggest news of the day, the Hogs played at Ole Miss. The game was originally scheduled to be played yesterday but due to the inclement weather, it was rescheduled for today. Did anyone expect the Hogs to win? I didn't, but I've been wrong before. I know, it's hard to believe that I was wrong, but I was. In my defense, the Hogs hadn't won a road SEC game in 2 years, 15 straight away games. Clark and Fortson had never won a road SEC game. That all changed today. They went to Oxford and won. It wasn't televised, but I listened on the radio. Admittedly, I wasn't giving it my full attention because I was watching the Pro-Bowl at the same time, but I caught the most important statistic of all....Ole Miss 73, Arkansas 80. What makes this win even better, if that's even possible, is that Ole Miss was ranked in the top 20...one poll ranking them #18. If I hadn't listened to it myself I might not believe it. Arkansas went on the road in the SEC and beat a ranked team. Hot Dog, Hot Dog, Hot Diggity Dog!!!

So, I'll end this by saying...Who Dat, Pig Sooie and Hook 'Em!!!

Tails Never Fails

Number of SEC wins for the Hogs: 2
Days Texas stayed ranked at #1: 1.5
Number of picks I got right last week: 2
First Superbowl trip ever for a franchise (and after a terrible hurricane destroyed the entire city and everyone thought the team would leave): Priceless!

In an earlier post I said that I'm not very good at making picks. Well, I was wrong, at least when it comes to the picks I made last weekend in the NFL Playoff games. I picked Indy and New Orleans to win. Indy won in convincing fashion. At the beginning of the game, the Jets were outplaying them and I briefly thought the underdogs might do it again. Then Manning started being...well, Manning...and the Colts are going to another Superbowl.

As for New Orleans...what can be said about a team that has never been to a Superbowl in the history of the franchise? They didn't play well enough to win last weekend, yet when the clock ran out, the score was even and they had a chance to win it in overtime. The Vikings played horribly, turning the ball over 5 times. Favre was harassed all night long, he was pressured and he ended up on the ground too many times to count. He had a chance to win it for his team at the end of regulation, but he did what he always does...he threw an ill-advised pass and it was intercepted. (Big surprise! After all, this is Brett Favre we're talking about.) To make matters worse, the Vikes called Heads during the coin toss for overtime. Haven't they ever heard that "tails never fails" when it comes to overtime? Apparently not, and the Saints got the ball. They drove the field, had some help with some calls from the officiating crew, and got the GW FG to send them to the Superbowl. The Saints are the Aint's No More!!! I anticipate the Superbowl will be a thriller. (At some point, I will get into the differences of NFL and NCAA overtime rules.)

Well, Texas stayed at #1 for all of a day and a half before losing to Kansas State, then to U Conn, then to Baylor today. Is Texas headed for major trouble? Will they get back on track and start winning? I can understand losing to Kansas State, but U Conn and Baylor? My buddies in Burnt Orange are giving me heartburn lately every time they step on the hardwood. Dexter Pittman is a beast and a force to be reckoned with, but when will he and the rest of the team start playing like Texas basketball should? I'd prefer sooner rather than later. If only Rick Barnes would take my call...

After Arkansas lost in terrible fashion, they played a great game against Mississippi State, at home, and won. Fortson had 30+ 2nd half points to lead the Hogs to the much needed win. The Hogs were set to take on the Rebels of Ole Miss this afternoon, but a Thursday night ice/winter storm caused difficulties in travel and the game has been postponed until tomorrow, Sunday. This Arkansas basketball team seems to have more personalities and mood swings than a menopausal woman, so my question is this...which Arkansas team will show up tomorrow against the Rebels? (On another note, will HDN be in attendance? I'm just saying...)

Lots has happened in the world of sports in the last week. I didn't even mention the retirement announcement from Kurt Warner, Serena wins the Australian Open, and the Pro-Bowl is this weekend. I think having the Pro-Bowl BEFORE the Superbowl is stupid. I also think the NFL requiring the players from the Colts and the Saints to be at the game is stupid. They aren't going to play so why make them fly to Miami, stand on the sidelines, then fly back home only to turn around and fly BACK to Miami the very next day to practice for the big game? Incredibly asinine, but Roger Goodell is doing the same thing Rick Barnes is...he isn't taking my calls! I understand that the winning Pro-Bowl players get $45,000 to attend and the losing players get $22,500 but to these guys, that's pocket-change and the disadvantages are far greater if they are required to attend...again, JMO.

So, I'll end this posting by making another pick for the Superbowl. I pick...

New Orleans!

Arkansas and Texas

My two favorite college teams of all time are the Texas Longhorns and the Arkansas Razorbacks. YES, it IS possible to like both of these teams equally. I've been argued with and people try so hard to convince me that I can not like both of these teams, but be assured that it IS possible.

Today, both of my teams played basketball. Arkansas played the Kentucky Wildcats, currently ranked #2, but will be ranked #1 after today. The final score was Kentucky 101, Arkansas 70. The score is indicative of the huge schism between the way the two teams played. Arkansas was embarrassed, totally! At one point, I actually turned the channel to HGTV because I just couldn't stand to watch it. On one hand, I feel sorry for some of the players. On the other hand, I see the effort some of them bring to the court and it's hard for me to feel sorry for them. Last year's 2 and 12 SEC record is looking unattainable if they continue to play this way. We'll see how bad is gets before it gets better(if it does).

Texas was ranked #1 before a loss earlier in the week to Kansas State, their first loss of the season. They played U Conn today @ UConn and they lost again. The score was UConn 88, Texas 74. I was flipping back and forth between this game, the game between Arkansas and Kentucky and HGTV because I was so disappointed in BOTH of my teams. I briefly thought about finding a totally new and different team to cheer for this season since it looks like I might be disappointed in at least one team at a time, if not both. I'm not the type of person who allows my allegiance to come and go that quickly, though I can be tempted to feel that way, especially after a weekend like this. BUT...I will regroup and hopefully Arkansas and Texas will pull themselves together and start playing better SOON.

So, I'll end by posting this. Whooo Pig Sooie! and Hook 'em Horns!!!

Introduction

Okay, so I'm new to this. I've heard of people having a blog. My own mother has one and it's quite entertaining to read. So, I thought "what they hey...why not have one of my own?!" I began to think about a topic for a blog, one that people would actually be interested in. I love sports. If you know me at all you already know this. So, I've decided to start a blog about sports. It might seem unusual for a girl, a young woman, to be so interested and educated when it comes to sports but I am unique. My daddy and I watched sports regularly when I was growing up. He helped foster my love for sports from a very early age. (Thanks Dad!)

Anyway, having said all of this, my blog will be different than some. I will try my best to bring a different viewpoint to this topic. I will start off by making some picks, only because it's the popular thing to do. The NFL Playoffs are going on and this weekend is the Conference Championship games. The first is Indianapolis v. New York Jets. I pick Indy. The second is New Orleans v. Minnesota. I pick New Orleans. We'll see how good I am at making picks. It's not my strongest attribute; I tend to pick on emotion, so I'm not hopeful that I'll have a good record on this.

So, please be patient and let's see if I can make this fun. Thanks and enjoy!
